The course

Laboratories are not certified. They are accredited, and the difference runs all the way through.

A management system certificate says an organisation runs a system that conforms to a standard. Laboratory accreditation says something narrower and harder: that this laboratory is technically competent to perform these specific tests or calibrations, to a stated uncertainty, and that its results can be relied upon. That is why the body granting it is an accreditation body rather than a certification body, why the work is called assessment rather than audit, and why the people who do it are assessors.

This course prepares you for that work. Across 40 CPD hours you go through ISO/IEC 17025:2017 in full, general, structural, resource, process and management system requirements, and then through the technical core that decides whether a laboratory passes: metrological traceability, method verification and validation, evaluation of measurement uncertainty, sampling, decision rules for statements of conformity, and assuring the validity of results. It closes with a formal examination.

Nothing in an ISO 9001 lead auditor course prepares you to ask whether an uncertainty budget is credible. That question is most of a laboratory assessment.

More than 250 accredited laboratories, and every one is assessed

The Pakistan National Accreditation Council's public register of active accreditations lists over 250 testing and calibration laboratories, concentrated in pharmaceuticals, textiles, food, water and calibration. Every one of them is assessed on a cycle, prepares for those visits, and runs its own internal assessments in between.

Accreditation here is recognised abroad

PNAC is a signatory to the International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation mutual recognition arrangement, with its status extended to inspection under ISO/IEC 17020 in September 2019. For an exporter that arrangement is the whole point: a result from an accredited laboratory is intended to be accepted in other signatory economies rather than retested on arrival.

The technical content is in no other auditor course

Metrological traceability, method verification and validation, evaluation of measurement uncertainty, proficiency testing, decision rules for stating conformity. None of it appears in a quality, safety or security auditor qualification, and all of it is where a laboratory assessment either finds something or misses it.

Assessor, not auditor, and it is not a detail

Several providers in this market advertise an ISO 17025 lead auditor certification. Laboratories are accredited, not certified, and the activity is assessment. Using the vocabulary of the wrong regime is a reliable sign that the course was adapted from a management system syllabus rather than written for laboratories.

ISO/IEC 17025:2017 allows two routes for the management system, Option A within the standard itself and Option B through a conforming ISO 9001 system. The course covers both and how the assessment differs depending on which route a laboratory has taken.

How much does the ISO 17025 lead assessor course cost in Pakistan?

The fee is between PKR 70,000 and PKR 90,000, roughly USD 250 to 320, and the examination fee is included in that figure. Is a laboratory certified or accredited to ISO 17025?

Accredited. Certification says an organisation runs a conforming management system. Accreditation says a specific laboratory is technically competent to carry out specific tests or calibrations, to a stated uncertainty. The body granting it is an accreditation body, in Pakistan the Pakistan National Accreditation Council, and the activity is assessment rather than audit. Anyone offering to certify your laboratory to ISO 17025 is describing the wrong regime.

Does this course make me a PNAC assessor?

No, and no course can. Accreditation bodies select, train and appoint their own assessors through their own process, and PNAC runs its own assessor training for that purpose. What this course does is build the competence: it qualifies you to assess a laboratory against ISO/IEC 17025, which is what internal assessors, technical managers and consultants preparing a laboratory for accreditation actually need. If your goal is specifically to be appointed by an accreditation body, apply to them directly and we will tell you so.

Why is it called lead assessor rather than lead auditor?

Because the accreditation world uses assessment, not audit, and the distinction carries technical weight. An assessment includes witnessing tests, examining traceability chains and interrogating uncertainty budgets, which a management system audit does not. Courses advertised as ISO 17025 lead auditor are usually adapted from a management system syllabus, and the vocabulary is the giveaway.

How long is the course?

40 CPD hours in total, delivered across five modules. The final module closes with the formal examination. How those hours are scheduled depends on the format you choose, which is why we quote the course in hours rather than in days.

Do I need a science background?

You need to be comfortable with numbers, because module four works through real uncertainty budgets. A science or engineering background helps considerably and most delegates have one. If you are coming from quality or administration inside a laboratory, tell us your role before you book and we will give you an honest answer about whether to start here.

Does it cover both management system options?

Yes. ISO/IEC 17025:2017 allows Option A, where the management system requirements are met within the standard itself, and Option B, where they are met through a management system conforming to ISO 9001. The course covers both and how an assessment differs depending on which route the laboratory has taken.
